Lymphedema

Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of lymphatic fluid which causes swelling that typically occurs in the arm(s) or leg(s), but may arise in any part of the body. This condition may occur after surgery, radiation therapy, infection, trauma, or without an obvious cause at all. Lymphedema is treated with "Complex Decongestive Therapy", which is provided by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT). Decongestive treatment is also effective in treating chronic venous insufficiency. Treatment may include manual therapy (including manual lymph drainage), compression bandaging, skin care, therapeutic exercises, and education in self-management.
